about Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates (the most populous being Dubai), and also capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the UAE's seven emirates. Abu Dhabi city is situated on an island off the Persian Gulf from the central western coast, while the majority of the city and Emirate reside on the mainland connected to the rest of the country. As of 2019, Abu Dhabi's urban area has an estimated population of 1.45 million people, out of 2.9 million people in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, as of 2016.

Abu Dhabi houses local and federal government offices, is the seat of the United Arab Emirates Government, the Supreme Oil Council, home to the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family and the President of the UAE, who is from this family. Abu Dhabi's rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with the massive oil and gas reserves and production, relatively high average income of its population, has transformed the city into a large and advanced metropolis. Today the city is the country's centre of political and industrial activities, and a major cultural and commercial centre, due to its position as the capital. Abu Dhabi accounts for about two-thirds of the roughly $400-billion United Arab Emirates economy.

More about ABU DHABI

Abu Dhabi has numerous dining options and visitors are often bewildered by the sheer volume and diversity of choice across the emirate. Cuisine from around the world mingles in Abu Dhabi with restaurants offering a vibrant and varied mix of international flavours and impressive culinary standards.

Enter Abu Dhabi: A place in the desert not only with a stunning coastline and a thriving fishing industry, but a  fascinating food culture as well. Good food in the desert? Absolutely! There’s even good dessert in the desert.

Abu Dhabi is a place where you can find virtually any kind of  international cuisine should you desire it. Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese, American, Mexican, Indian, you name it.  But why go all the way to Abu Dhabi (or anywhere, for that matter) and eat the same food you could get back home? Why not try the delicious things you can’t find in your country?

Half of the fun of international travel for me is discovering what food I have been missing by not living in whatever area I happen to be visiting. In my experience, the little, weathered  old granny cooking over a propane tank on a street corner has a lot more knowledge and tricks up her sleeve than the fancy cook in the restaurant a few meters away. And she’s a lot more fun to talk to.

So, when in Abu Dhabi, try out the local cuisine! It is rooted in the Middle Eastern cooking traditions and has its own fantastic flavors and flair. Simple, but meticulous. Spicy, but subtle. Delicate, but flavorful.

Relax on the Beaches

Beach, Dominican Republic, Caribbean

With many of the emirate’s world class hotels offering their own beachfront facilities, Abu Dhabi’s public and club beaches offer visitors and residents alike a different way of escaping the city, soaking up some rays and enjoying our shimmering turquoise waters.

There are all kinds of beaches in Abu Dhabi, each with its public: the most well known are those of The corniche - the most beautiful are on Saadiyat Island - the smallest on Yas Island, along the mangrove - the most confidential at the the Emirates Palace. The more offbeat on Maya Island

The public beaches free of charge of The corniche of Abu Dhabi are open to all with proper beach attire. These beaches have toilets and showers. There is also next to The heritage village a small beach accessible (in front of the Corniche).

Family beaches are reserved for families and women, and in theory not accessible to men alone. You can go there for a few dirhams. Higher price apply for long chair and weekend (Friday Saturday in the UAE).

Public beaches of the Corniche have a public more conservative than beaches in hotels. You can bring food and non-alcoholic beverages.
